Movement is medicine

Well here I am showing up on this blog again! I guess I didn’t hold true to my commitment of regular posting but I have not forgotten about this space.

And I’m here to say whether you’re running, swimming, or biking at threshold pace or a snail’s pace, the point is just to find joy in whatever you do.

My joy comes from seeing the morning sunrise (or sub a nice evening sunset) and feeling the surge of endorphins as the miles stack up.

Pushing the pace or just taking a slow jog, either way gives me space to process my thoughts and work through whatever is happening in life. Movement is medicine, and running is the regular prescription I need.

Over the past couple years, I’ve fought through injuries and learned more and more about what my body needs. I am finally running pain free, consistently for the past 6 months, for the first time since October 2022, and I couldn’t be more happy.

I could’ve given up and lost hope, but I know somehow it is my purpose to run the miles as “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13.). As a matter of fact, this is a prayer I say quite regularly when running or racing, praying that my passion can inspire someone out there to ignite their own fire.

I am currently training for a fall half marathon so stay tuned for more progress updates!

Colt Creek Half Marathon

There’s something feral about trail running that draws me in. The freedom, the connection with nature, the anticipation of the unknown! It’s a feeling like no other, and I’ve gotten to explore many places I didn’t even know existed once I stepped out of my comfort zone!

The roots, the rocks, the mud, all add to the adventure. I’d happily trade my Mon – Fri for this if I could earn a decent paycheck, but let’s be honest here too. It wouldn’t be any fun all alone! Part of the excitement is being surrounded by other trail runners, even complete strangers.

We’re all out here for a common purpose, and I’m pretty sure we thrive on both the adrenaline rush and our love of the great outdoors…Except maybe those first timers that didn’t know what they were in for. I’ve been there and done that too! 😆 But with faith over fear I kept putting one foot in front of the other, and here I am loving every minute! You should give it a try!

Colt Creek Half Marathon – 2:30:28

Holy hills!

Today I raced the Howey-in-the-Hills half marathon in central Florida. Wow, the elevation gain was unreal! 556 feet of climbing over some serious rollers. This was not your typical ‘flat Florida’ style event!

There’s actually a road down in front of the lake
A little glimpse of the rollers

I put up a good fight and shaved off 1 min 48 sec compared to the very flat half I ran last month! Still not a PR, but getting closer to my goal race pace. Today was focused on a good pre-race routine, warm up drills, and form, form, form! I’d say it all paid off.

Last year I attempted a half marathon a month – but only successfully completed the distance about 6-8 times over the 12 months. Granted there were fewer races, however I fell off the wagon due to my own laziness and cannot blame anyone or anything else. The goal is simple – run 13.1 or more miles within 24 hours, meaning you can either race or just go for a run, or 2, as long as you get the total mileage in a 24 hour period of time. So far I’m 2/2 in 2022, so I’m planning to keep the streak alive and see where this training, and racing, takes me!
